Message from the Superintendent

October 22, 2021

Dear Abington School Community,

I am writing to inform you that from October 16, 2021, through today, two individuals from the Early Education Program and one individual from Abington Middle School have tested positive for COVID-19. We are continuing to follow all Department of Health protocols, including collaborating with the Abington Health Director to complete contact tracing.

As you know, the Massachusetts Commissioner of Education, Jeffery Riley, extended the mask requirement for schools through at least November 1, 2021. However, if a school demonstrates a vaccination rate of 80 percent or more of all students and staff on or after October 15, 2021, then vaccinated individuals would no longer be subject to the mask requirement.

Our school nurses have been collecting information on vaccinated students and staff and reviewing the data to determine our vaccination rate. As of today, the vaccination rate at Abington High School is below the 80% threshold at 69.88%; approximately 75 individuals will need to complete their vaccinations to attain an 80% vaccination rate. The Middle School, Woodsdale, Beaver Brook and the Abington Early Education Program are not mathematically able to achieve an 80% vaccination rate due to the number of students under 12 years old who are not yet eligible for a COVID-19 vaccine.

Because we have not attained an 80% vaccination rate, we are unable to consider lifting the mask requirement in any of our schools.

Everyone is encouraged to get vaccinated. Getting a COVID-19 vaccine is an important step to prevent getting sick with COVID-19 and getting vaccinated will help protect you and those around you.

We will continue to adhere to all safety measures. We are grateful to our families for the continued efforts to keep students home at the first sign of symptoms.
