Dear Abington Families,
We understand that recent changes in federal immigration enforcement policies may have raised concerns within our community. Based on both state and federal laws, every child is entitled to equal access to a free public education.
The Massachusetts Office of the Attorney General has provided schools with specific guidance on K-12 Schools Obligations to Protect Students and Their Information.
As a public school system, the Abington Public Schools will continue to comply with all local, state, and federal laws as well as any judicial orders. Our District has and will continue to keep the following procedures in place, as recommended by the Massachusetts Attorney General's Office:
*Under the Family Education and Privacy Rights Act of 1974 (FERPA), we cannot give a student’s personally identifiable information contained in education records to third parties without the written consent of a parent or guardian.
*We do not collect or store information relating specifically to the immigration status of students or their parents.
*If a U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agent asks to question or remove a student from their classroom, schools must obtain the specific, informed written consent of a parent or guardian or be provided with a valid, judicial warrant signed by a federal or state judge.
Our District seeks to provide a safe and supportive environment for all students and families, and that commitment has not changed.
If you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact your school's administration or my office
Sincerely,
Dr. Felicia Moschella ~ Superintendent
