APS students in grades 5, 6, 7, 8, and 9 receive instruction on human development from a district-approved curriculum based on the Massachusetts Comprehensive Health Framework in their Health Education classes. Pursuant to MGL, c.71, sec. 32A, parents or guardians may exempt* their children from any portion of said curriculum through annual written notification to the school principal. No child so exempted shall be penalized by reason of such exemption. The links below provide parents/guardians the ability to preview the implemented curriculum that primarily involves human sexual education or human sexuality issues, other instructional activities and programs for which the instruction and materials focus principally on human sexual education, the biological mechanics of human reproduction and sexual development, or human sexuality issues from which children may be exempted via annual written request.
*Parents/guardians may not exempt children from learning activities primarily involving gender and sexual orientation, body systems, sexual violence, healthy relationships, or safety (e.g., exploitation, abuse).
