*****************************************************************

Good afternoon:

As we begin our April vacation week, I want to take a moment to celebrate our extraordinary cafeteria staff. These dedicated individuals serve well over a thousand meals daily—both breakfast and lunch—to our Abington Middle School and High School communities.

During the past two weeks of AMS spirit days, our entire cafeteria team enthusiastically participated every single day, bringing extra joy to these events in ways our students definitely noticed and appreciated.

I'd like to extend special recognition to cashier Mr. Bill Finnegan. Each day, approximately 300 students pass through his register, and remarkably, he greets each one by name with a warm wish for a good day. This simple personal connection might seem small, but its impact is profound students consistently leave his register with brightened faces and genuine smiles. Thank you, Bill, and thank you to our entire cafeteria team, for being such a vital part of what makes AMS a wonderful place to grow and learn.

We hope that the next nine days allow our community to rest and recharge. There is value in down time and the ability to pursue healthy interests and self-care. We wish you the best of weeks and cannot wait to welcome everyone back on April 28, 2025.

Have a relaxing and restful week.

Mr. MacCurtain, Principal

Ms. Sullivan, Assistant Principal

Grade 7 & 8 Math Course Placement 2025-2026

Abington Middle School has two grade level mathematics courses in grades 7 & 8. Those are Math 7, Accelerated Math 7, Math 8 and Accelerated Math 8. The majority of students will be placed into the grade level Math course, either Math 7 or Math 8.

In alignment with the Massachusetts Curriculum Standards, a group of students will be placed into Accelerated Math courses. Grade 7 placement into Accelerated Math is based on statewide assessments, a math common assessment in grade 6 and teacher recommendation. Grade 6 parents/guardians will be notified of placement decisions via mail in mid-April.

Grade 8 placement into Accelerated Math is based on statewide assessments, mathematics classroom achievement in grade 7 and teacher recommendation or can be initiated through parents/guardians request. Grade 7 families will only be notified if there is a recommendation for change of placement. This notification will take place closer to the end of the school year.

AMS REMINDER/BICYCLES AND SCOOTERS

Students who ride bicycles or scooters to school are encouraged to wear safety helmets. Students who ride bicycles or scooters to school must abide by the following guidelines. Failure to do so may result in the loss of the privilege of riding a bicycle or scooter to school. Upon arriving at school, students will park their equipment in the appropriate area designated by a bicycle rack. As you know, cycling is a great way for students to get to and from school, and it can also be a lot of fun. However, it is important to make sure that your child is riding their bike safely.

Here are a few tips for bike safety:

  • Make sure your child's bike is in good working order. This means that the brakes work properly, the tires are inflated, and the chain is lubricated.

  • Your child should always wear a helmet when riding their bike. Helmets can help to prevent serious head injuries in the event of a crash.

  • Teach your child the rules of the road. This includes things like obeying traffic signals, riding in the same direction as traffic, and signaling before turning.

  • Make sure your child is aware of their surroundings when riding their bike. They should be on the lookout for other vehicles, pedestrians, and objects in the road.

  • If your child is riding their bike at night, make sure they have lights on their bike. This will help to make them more visible to other drivers.

**There is no change for the 7/8 and HS Chorus date, which is Wednesday, May 14th and the 7/8 and HS Band Concert date, which is Tuesday, May 20th at 7pm.

Anonymous Reporting and Safety Link

Abington Middle School has an anonymous tip line to report any concerns about the school, typically used for reporting bullying, harassment, and/or discrimination. The link below allows people to submit reports and concerns that go directly to our administration. While this tip line is anonymous and available as needed, we also encourage you to contact us directly, as we seek to create and maintain a positive school culture and climate in partnerships with families and the community. Click Link Here

HEALTHY ATTENDANCE PRACTICES

AMS Nurse News

Please provide the school nurse with an updated physical and immunization form. If you have any questions or concerns, please contact the nurse, Joan Smith at (781) 616-2951 or email joansmith@abingtonps.org. Please keep your child home if running a fever for at least 24 hours without the use of fever reducing medication.

*Please ensure your child wears appropriate clothing for the changes in temperature/weather. We strive to have PE and recess outside unless it is raining or the "Real Feel" temperature is 20 degrees or below.

IMPORTANT SCHOOL SAFETY REMINDER

As the school year continues, we want to remind you of the importance of safety around our school campus, especially during drop-off and pick-up times. With many students walking or biking to school, it is essential that we all exercise caution on the roads. Please be extra vigilant when driving near the school and be aware of students who may be crossing the street or riding bicycles. Slow down, be patient, and always yield to pedestrians.

DOOR 10 DROP OFF SAFETY PROCEDURES

When you drop off your students at Door 10 in the morning, please encourage your students to exit the vehicle onto the sidewalk side of the building for safety reasons.

NOTES FROM HOME

Parents must notify the school if your child is to be absent, tardy, or dismissed. A written note must be submitted for each absence stating the date and reason for the absence. A note is also needed to dismiss your child from school or if your child will not be taking the bus home. Phone calls changing student dismissal plans can impact child safety. Thank you for cooperating with this important child safety issue.

LAPTOP REMINDER

Please have your student bring their charged laptop and a water bottle to school every day. (Plastic water bottles please - no glass bottles).
