A Note from Miss Barresi...
Dear Families,
This week, our third and fourth graders met to discuss our current school-wide core value focus of Resilience. Resilience is the ability to not give up when things get hard. Part of resilience involves possessing a positive mindset - to think, āYes! I am smart and I can do this!ā
We watched an animated short film, āBelly Flop,ā and discussed the film character, Penny, and the ways she used resilience to teach herself how to dive.
With the fourth graders, we followed up with an incredible short video clip, "Don't Be a Candle Blower Outer," which is a phrase popularized by BrenƩ Brown, a renowned researcher and storyteller. Metaphoric in nature, the underlying message about friendship was powerful. We unpacked the video clip and discussed the friendship message together.
The "flame of the candle" represents a person's beautiful inner light or potential. We want to surround ourselves with people who will keep this light shining bright and who will protect this light. Likewise, we also want to celebrate our friends whenever their lights are shining bright. The positivity of the light is connected to resilience.
āCandle Blower Outersā are people who try to diminish the light because they donāt have room in their lives to help others shine. Giving the students a moment to reflect upon their actions over the last few weeks was a productive learning opportunity. If they recognized that at times, they were behaving as a āCandle Blower Outer,ā then they have the potential to change their behavior and be the best friend whom they wish to be.
All in all, we want our children to be positive, shine bright, and be happy. Hope that you continue these important conversations at home. Wishing you a wonderful winter break filled with peace, love, and happiness.
Sincerely yours,
Miss Barresi - Principal
Spotlight on Grade 3 - Rooms 6&7
Last week, grade 3 students from Mrs. Clark and Mrs. Eddyās classrooms transformed a gingerbread construction project into an interdisciplinary engineering design activity! This creative topic of study incorporated writing and digital literacy.
The children worked in small groups led by an adult to carefully construct each step of the gingerbread house building process. After completing each hands-on step (and sampling some of the data), the students recorded the step in writing to revise and clarify their thinking.
After thinking like scientists, students returned to their classrooms to showcase their curations with their first digital PowerPoint presentation of the year. Families were invited to view the finished school projects at home by logging into Office 365.
Save the Dates!!!
