Message from the Principal

Dear BBES Families,

As noted in a newsletter earlier this year, besides typical subjects like reading, math, and science, students at Beaver Brook Elementary School learn and develop social and emotional skills. In addition to direct lessons about how to get along with and empathize with others, our children learn how to interact safely by experimenting and making mistakes. It is important for adults to understand that our children are learning how to socialize appropriately and that this process will include times when children will make poor choices, be unkind, or hurt each other's feelings. Our role as adults is to help children learn from these experiences, let them know it is okay to make mistakes, and help them understand when their peers make these kinds of social 'mistakes' towards them. For students who have difficulty learning social skills or demonstrate a pattern of inappropriate behavior, we work with the student and family using several different interventions to improve their social interactions. Every interaction is an opportunity for all children to learn social skills and improve relationships. Thank you for doing what you can to help your child learn how to interact with others in healthy, age-appropriate, and safe ways - knowing that there will be ups and downs. Please reach out to school staff with questions, concerns, or ideas you may have about your own child's social development. Please be reminded that though COVID-related restrictions may be lifting in many public places, schools still require social-distancing and face coverings. Thank you for helping us finish this school year strong and healthy. Be well ~ Dr. Basta
